From kWh to certificate. How ERE works.
ERE is the Dutch system for green energy certificates in transport. When someone charges an EV using electricity from the grid, every kWh can be converted into an Energy Registration Unit. These units are traded on a regulated market where fuel companies buy them to meet their renewable energy obligations.
Charging session
A driver charges their EV at a station with a MID-certified meter. The session data (kWh, timestamps, meter ID) is automatically recorded by Plugchoice.
Certificate registration
A booking service provider (inboekdienstverlener) takes the session data and registers ERE certificates with the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa).
Verification
An independent verifier (verificateur) audits the entire administrative chain to ensure data integrity and compliance.
Trading and payout
Verified certificates are sold to fuel companies on the regulated market. Revenue flows back to the charger owner.
